Category Narrative

The story you tell about why the world needs your category to exist — bigger than your product.

What it is

A category narrative = the story about why a problem matters and why a new category needs to exist to solve it. The product is the answer to the narrative.

Why it matters

Without narrative, you sell features against competitors. With narrative, you sell the future — and competitors look outdated.

Best example

Salesforce: "No software." Created the SaaS narrative. Drift: "Conversational marketing." Created chatbot category. Each won because the narrative made the category inevitable.

How to build yours

1. Name the old way. 2. Show why it's broken now. 3. Name the new way. 4. Position your product as the way to do it.
