Differentiation
The specific reason a buyer picks you over the next-best alternative.
What it is
Differentiation = the structural reason your category buyer chooses you. Not features. Not "we care more." A real, defensible, buyer-relevant difference.
Why it matters
Without it, you compete on price. Price competition is a race to the bottom. With it, you can charge premium and keep margin.
How to find yours
1. Pull what 10 competitors say. 2. Find what they all say (commodity). 3. Find what only some say (positioning slot). 4. Find what nobody says yet (open ground). The open ground is yours if you can defend it.
Common trap
"Better customer support" is not differentiation. Everyone says it. Buyers don't believe it. Real differentiation has to be specific, measurable, and observable from outside.
