Retention Cohort

Customers grouped by when they joined, tracked over time. The shape of the curve tells you whether you have a growth engine or a leaky bucket.

What it is

Cohort = January 2025 sign-ups, tracked month by month. Compares to February 2025 sign-ups separately. Reveals whether retention is improving or decaying.

Common mistake

Reading aggregate retention without cohorting. Hides whether new customers retain better or worse than old ones.

Healthy pattern

Healthy cohorts: month-3 retention stable across cohorts, with newer cohorts trending up. Concerning: newer cohorts retain worse.
