50 AI Photography Prompts That Don't Look Like AI

Real prompts with real camera specs. Each one is designed to produce images that look like they were shot on film by a skilled photographer, not generated by a machine. Bookmark this page.

The Anti-AI Philosophy

The reason most AI-generated images look fake isn't the technology. It's the prompts. People ask for "stunning, beautiful, ultra-realistic 8K photograph" and get exactly what they deserve: a glossy, overprocessed, obviously-AI image that screams stock photo.

Real photographs aren't perfect. They have grain. Slightly off white balance. A little motion blur in someone's hand. A background that's busy because real life is busy. The photographer made choices about what to include and exclude, and those choices left artifacts.

The framework for realistic AI photography is simple:

Camera + Scene + Mood + Film Stock = Real-looking image

Specify the camera system. Describe the scene like a location scout, not a poet. Set the emotional tone. Name the film stock. Let the AI fill in the details.

The Banned Word List

These words and phrases are banned from every prompt. They trigger the AI's "make it look impressive" mode, which is the opposite of what you want:

beautiful stunning perfect 8K hyperrealistic ultra-detailed masterpiece award-winning breathtaking dramatic lighting cinematic professional photo HDR unreal engine octane render

Instead: be specific. Name real cameras. Name real film stocks. Describe real lighting conditions. The more you sound like a photographer talking to an assistant on set, the more real the output looks.

How to Use These Prompts

These prompts work in ChatGPT (GPT-4o image generation), Midjourney, and most other AI image generators. A few tips:

  1. Use them as-is first. Don't add to them. Don't append "4K ultra-detailed" or any modifier. The restraint is what makes them work.
  2. Swap the film stock to change the mood. Portra 400 gives you warm, soft skin tones. Tri-X 400 gives you gritty black and white. Ektachrome gives you punchy, saturated color. Cinestill 800T gives you amber tungsten warmth with halation. The film stock is the single most powerful lever.
  3. Change the camera to change the format. 35mm cameras (Nikon F3, Canon AE-1) give you a classic rectangular frame. Medium format (Mamiya RZ67, Pentax 67, Hasselblad) gives you a squarer, more detailed look. Compact cameras (Contax T2, Ricoh GR III) give you a snapshot, everyday feel.
  4. Always include a human. Empty still lifes look more artificial than scenes with people. Even a hand, a blurred figure in the background, or someone partially out of frame adds life and scale.
  5. Describe light like a photographer, not a poet. "Morning light from a window on the left" is better than "ethereal golden luminance." Be literal. Name the source, the direction, and the quality (hard/soft/diffused).

The Framework, Summarized

1. Camera system — names a specific real camera (sets the "look")

2. Film stock or profile — controls color, grain, and tonal character

3. Scene description — what's literally in front of the camera, described like a location scout

4. Light source + direction — where the light is coming from and what quality it has

5. Mood / energy — one or two words for the feeling (quiet, chaotic, intimate, busy)

6. What NOT to include — no superlatives, no quality modifiers, no rendering engines

That's the whole system. Camera, film, scene, light, mood. Simple prompts that trust the AI to fill in the details, instead of overloading it with adjectives that push it toward its worst instincts.

Every prompt above follows this framework. Use them directly, adapt them for your brand, or use the framework to write your own. The goal is always the same: images that look like a real photographer shot them on real film in a real place.
